Detroit Budget Hearing, April 10, 2023: We Need FULL FUNDING for Right To Counsel Ordinance!
Call to Action: REQUEST FOR COMMENT AT 4/10 Final City Budget Hearing
On Monday, April 10, 2023 the Detroit City Council will vote on the City budget.
How much are our lives valued by the City of Detroit? We believe that Detroit families' lives matter. Nearly 60,000 Detroiters, primarily black women, and children, will face eviction if the Right to Counsel Ordinance is not fully funded. 10% of Detroit's total population will face eviction if nothing changes. Approximately 29% of Detroit's homeless population are families with school-age children! When will enough be enough? MONDAY is when we raise our voices again and say "NO MORE." RSVP: bit.ly/DETRTC23
We will not back down. We will fight until every Detroiter gets their housing rights provided by law!
Join us Monday, April 10th, to tell Mayor Duggan and Detroit City Council to:
Fully fund the Detroit Right to Counsel Ordinance now!
Please don't lie to us and say there's no money when Detroit has a 2.6 billion dollar budget, a $156 million budget surplus, and received over $826 million in federal ARPA funds to help Detroiters recover!
Fully funding Right to Counsel would be less than 1% of the City Budget! Prioritize Detroit families first!
Budget $27 million for the Detroit Right to Counsel Ordinance now!
We passed a law - now follow it and give Detroiters their right to legal counsel!

USE YOUR POWER. TELL YOUR STORY
You have power. There is power in your voice and power in sharing your story. We will have a camera onsite to record community members' stories before and after public comment. We are documenting the truth about housing injustice in our city. We will combat lies and dirty politics with the truth. Please feel free to share about a housing experience, an eviction you've experienced or witnessed, and why you are fighting for the right to counsel.
Working together, we will win this battle. We will get the Right to Counsel fully funded and keep Detroiters in their homes!
THANK YOU!
Thanks to everyone who took the time to call, email, and make public comments. Every time you weigh in, it makes a difference. We demand accountability. We don't settle for less than we deserve, and our community becomes more powerful. Monday's vote will impact the next year, so please join, share, and invite a friend.
Thank you!
