Donovan McCarty

Donovan is a staff attorney with Detroit Justice Center and graduate of University of Michigan Law School. Prior to joining DJC, Donovan clerked for George Caram Steeh in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He then worked as an Associate at Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone in their Public Finance Group. Most recently he was a Supervising Attorney with Michigan Legal Services, counseling clients facing eviction.

In his current position, Donovan represents clients in a range of legal matters, including family law, traffic, and landlord-tenant. In addition to his direct representation work, Donovan has advocated for systemic change through impact litigation. He has recently worked on several of Detroit Justice Center's litigation efforts, including those in support of the Detroit Will Breathe protesters and the ShotSpotter litigation. Donovan is also currently co-authoring DJC's forthcoming white paper on child support reform.

Donovan is also a videographer and filmmaker. He attended film school at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and has produced several independent projects that make the law more accessible to people. He is currently working on his second feature-length documentary, Unknown and Perhaps Unknowable, about the 1974 United States Supreme Court case Milliken v. Bradley.
