WE WON! We passed the Detroit Right To Counsel Ordinance 9-0!
This is a May 10, 2022 VICTORY message from the Detroit Right To Counsel Coalition.
Today is a huge victory for our community. Thank you all for the calls, emails, and public comments you made. Thank you for showing up! So many people showed up in person at today's public hearing that everyone could not get upstairs. Some couldn't get through on the phone. We said we'd pack the meeting, and we did! We have power, and our collective voice was heard!
"Today is the day we can start a new chapter in our Detroit history and put forth systemic change to ensure that we are protecting our most vulnerable residents in the city of Detroit."
-Tonya Myers Phillips, Detroit Right To Counsel Coalition
Our most vulnerable Detroit residents will now have the benefit and dignity of receiving legal representation when facing eviction. As a result of this, we know that thousands will stay in their homes. The Detroit Right To Counsel Coalition thanks our coalition members, Detroit City Council and Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, and every Detroit resident and ally who stood together in this fight for justice.
With gratitude and inspiration,
Detroit Right To Counsel Coalition
